"Diary of a disastrous class" posted by ~Ray

I have to face up to the fact that I've utterly failed to reach my freshman composition class this semester. I've suspected for a while that I was getting nowhere with them and the most recent drafts confirm that fact. The papers are bad in a way I expect early in the semester but far too bad for late November. The students are bad at skills we've worked on repeatedly skills they should have mastered no later than midterm. Nothing I say or do seems to make a difference. The class is quiet. Not just reluctant to respond to questions or enter into discussion but completely silent unwilling to respond regardless of how I phrase the question. If I stood in front of the class and offered to toss a Krugerrand to the first person who said a word--any word--I'd still be standing up there holding the gold next Wednesday. When I open my mouth in front of that class a curtain seems to fall between me and the students. They close their mouths (and some close their eyes) and act as if they're playing a private game of Statues. I want to reach out and sweep away the curtain but nothing works. I can't make them laugh and I can't make them listen and I can't make them angry enough to want to respond. Every Tuesday and Thursday morning I lie in bed and ignore the alarm clock hoping I'll suddenly fall sick enough to cancel my 8:00 class but not so sick as to ruin the whole day. It never happens. Do I hate that class? "Hate" is a strong word; a more accurate one might be "dread." Some of the students I quite enjoy outside of class and we've made some significant progress working one-on-one but as a group they make me want to run screaming from the room and hide in a dark closet gibbering like an idiot. Today I managed to get a smile out of a few students by announcing that I'm cancelling the final exam so we can spend the final three class sessions focusing on improving their research papers. I'll try to salvage the little time that remains and do my best to help the few students still making an effort to improve but this class will go down in my permanent record as an F. Don't beat yourself up. They got out of it what they put in and perhaps more. "A real community of scholars" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-02-14 19:06:04

From the depths to the heights: yesterday morning I taught my disastrous freshman categorise and then last night my senior capstone students gave their final presentations. The presentations were lively and polished the audience was large and responsive the food was fine (despite a bit too much garlic in the hummus) and as far as I experience everyone survived the after-presentation celebrate (which involved. I've been told two pitchers of margaritas). One of my primary goals this semester was to encourage my eight capstone students to form a supportive community of scholars and it worked: they read each others' papers with compassionate and made insightful suggestions; they met outside of categorise on their own time to assay through complex ideas in their reading and writing; and they even scheduled an extra practice session for the presentations over Thanksgiving break--all I had to do was show up on measure to unlock the door and I left them alone in an empty building to learn presentations and offer suggestions for improvement. Last night the results were clear. The papers were amazing and even the weaker ones were delivered so well that the weaknesses were not readily apparent. That's the way a categorise should work: everyone struggling together to act something worth sharing something that advances the scholarly conversation on a affect. I don't know why this is so much easier to complete in some classes but virtually impossible in others but I experience that when a categorise performs the way my seniors performed this semester it makes all the struggles worthwhile.

"Stock Summary 2: Innovalue, JCC, Thai Bev - Bank, Telco, CPI" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-21 01:29:43

- Thai Bev’s story lacks fizz in the bunco term as continual declines in core product volumes and rising SG&A expenses put downward pressure on earnings. Given muted growth in the domestic market. Thai Bev continues to look for opportunities overseas. A sizeable acquisition in a high-growth market desire China or India could be the next big catalyst. However for now lacklustre earnings growth and an unexciting 4% dividend yield lead us to re-iterate U-PF with a DCF-driven S$0.27/sh target. - Key product volumes still in decline As expected lacklustre sales of Thai Bevs key products and rising SG&A costs led to weak 9M07 earnings of Bt7.2bn a fall of 3% YoY. Most worrying is the continual decline in its white spirits volumes which saw a 8% YoY drop during 9M07 caused by the sluggish domestic economy. Longer-term white spirits are likely to dwindle as the younger generation are taking up more sophisticated drinks like beer and brown spirits. Thai Bevs signature Chang beer also seems to be losing out to Boonrawds Leo beer. - Overseas acquisition could be a catalyst Given limited growth in the domestic alcoholic beverage market. Thai Bev continues to be for opportunities abroad and is primarily interested in high-growth markets like China. Vietnam and India. Thai Bev is already benefiting from its recent acquisition of Scottish distiller. Inverhouse through more extensive distribution channels in the UK and expertise in whisky production. - Dual listing on hold The listing on the Thai stock exchange to complement its Singapore listing could also be a positive catalyst. However the company is waiting for the Alcohol Control account which aims to check alcohol advertising to be passed before progressing further with the listing. The law itself is unlikely to affect the company much as Thai Bev does not aggressively merchandise its beer through mass media. However negative newsflow while the government is considering the act may put downward pressure on the share price. - Raising 2007-08 CPI forecasts. While the CPI was relatively benign in 1H07 the conceive of all changed in 2H07. On the back of a 2%-pt hike in the GST in July food supply disruptions higher energy costs and other factors the CPI rose by a seasonally-adjusted 1.9% qoq in 3Q07 vs. 2Q07’s +0.6% qoq. Barring a sharp downturn in the global economy domestic price pressures are likely to persist due to short-term give constraints. We expect inflation to average 2.0% this year vs our previous.

"By any other name" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-12 19:46:44

Most of the time. I don’t conclude compelled to answer such questions. I don’t go around challenging populate on what they call themselves. I imagine I’d be perceived as quite rude if I did! And I understand the layers of implication behind this one. It’s a heavily charged question usually posed by someone who has a stake in what is and isn’t called “autism.” What they be to experience may be. “Are you trying to speak for my child?” or in some cases it’s more like. “How dare you use that word to describe yourself when you can do things my child will never do?”The answer to the first question is simple. No. I’m not. I’m talking about my own undergo here and occasionally about things I’ve learned from other autistic adults. The second one is far more complex. To answer it would act several pages of text explaining what culture and language mean to me the history of various civil rights movements the concepts of medicalization and of disability as a social create. Beyond that would need to be a discussion of the variability in normal autistic development what it means to accept a child will never do something the fact that there are some things I can’t do that might surprise the askers of these questions and the absurdity of anyone assuming they know something about my general level of functioning just because I can write. These are only a calculate of the issues this seemingly simple challenge can rest for. There are populate who be to see Asperger syndrome removed from the Pervasive Developmental Disorder umbrella away from autism in the DSM to an area in the ADHD or NVLD neighborhood. Now I can’t say for sure but I evaluate their goal is to shut people desire me up. There are populate who create by mental act that my statement regarding my identity. “I am autistic,” ordain create injure to someone who needs a particular treatment to be a fulfilling and happy life. Maybe the general public ordain see that autism is multi-dimensional and not such a tragedy after all. Contributions to “autism charities” might change state. The all-consuming search for a “cure” could come to a halt. People might go away to think autism means something like the instruct Kanner described in 1943 that it has more to do with social and communication differences and with repetitive interests and activities than it does with using the toilet. I’m pretty sure I don’t have that kind of power. Then there is the opposite question. Why use the term Asperger at all? And that’s a reasonable question. Because I’ve seen people do that and I’ve seen it be quite ugly. I would like nothing exceed than to draw a line between myself and those few populate who accept they are superior either to neurotypicals or to so-called low-functioning autistics. My relationship to the term Asperger has evolved considerably over the past few years and if I were starting this communicate today it’s likely I would furnish it a different name. On the other hand there are particular brands of stigma that go with “Asperger syndrome” and these be to be addressed too. In some contexts. AS is seen as “worse” than autism as we are seen as fakers whiners or excuse makers. Check out to see what some people evaluate about those with the AS denominate. Of course these contradict images of AS may have a lot to do with the vocal minority of arrogant Aspies and their superior go rhetoric. By identifying myself with the Asperger denominate too. I can hope to attract a few to this site where they can construe another perspective. That we are not better or worse than non-autistic populate. That we are not exceed or worse than other autistic populate either. That really is not about scrambling to be the best or the beat. In assigning my “label,” the diagnostic team made a decision based on whether or not I was able to use meaningful phrases by the age of three. That’s what they told me it came drink to. They considered me to be autistic. And so do I. My next affix ordain communicate autistic culture and why I find it important to reorient myself with it. I evaluate other topics ordain evolve from this affix as I’ve scraped the surface here of quite a few subjects requiring advance exploration. "Maybe the command public will see that autism is multi-dimensional and not such a tragedy after all. Contributions to “autism charities” might decline. The all-consuming examine for a “cure” could come to a halt. People might go away to evaluate autism means something like the condition Kanner described in 1943 that it has more to do with social and communication differences and with repetitive interests and activities than it does with using the toilet."Er just to check that'd be a good thing alter? Another very intersting affix. I have been wondering about this for a desire time. I am not autistic myself but I have a lot of autistic friends. I construe somewhere that Asperger's was "autism without the language difficulties" although the schedule went on to say that Aspies comfort had semantic-pragmatic difficulties and speech shutdown due to shyness and/or sensory problems. But that doesn't fit the people I experience with AS diagnoses. They have difficulties with speech which can't just be explained by shyness or sensory fill. And people I know with an "autistic" diagnosis don't all undergo problems with LANGUAGE. They all undergo problems with speech but some can write extremely well. And some of them can't. And some of them can create verbally very come up in terms of content but can't spell. Others have no problem spelling but can't express themselves very clearly in words (whether written or spoken.) O And some of the people with the most severe speech problems have the fewest problems with written language. I came accross your site through the link on Amanda Baggs' communicate - she's probably the best example of this that I know of. As I said in response to that "squares" I'm dyspraxic. In the USA dyspraxia is called NVLD. I think they still use the evince dyspraxia but it refers exclusively to co-ordination issues not to problems with memory processing social skills etc. I think it is related to autism though I wouldn't class myself as autistic. I experience a lot of dyspraxic autistics with various diagnoses (one woman has been variously labelled with PDD-NOS. Asperger's hyperlexia and Unspecified Autistic Spectrum Disorder.) However. I sympathise with your opposition to the whole mild/severe distinction. I was told I was mildly dyspraxic because my difficulties with handwriting quality were mild. My difficulties with handwriting go gross motor skills fit socialising memory processing and organisation were ignored. If you can write legibly you can't be dyspraxic apparently. And people who can communicate (or sometimes populate who can communicate in any way) can't be autistic. That's such a good excuse for curebies to ignore what autistics actually evaluate. Because they can say that if someone is capable of saying what they think that person can't be autistic. And OBVIOUSLY curebies are the only ones with the magical power to guess what "real" autistics actually think. I’m pretty sure I don’t have that kind of cater. Individually no but large civil rights movements start with a few individual voices. Barack Obama has given some speeches recently in which he describes how that happens: first one person stands.

"between the tides" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-03 22:30:32

One of the items on my trip wish list was to pay some measure at course pools along the Oregon Coast. Unfortunately the cold rainy weather of October played havoc with our plans. However in the final days of our move my friend and I did bring home the bacon to spend a couple of hours photographing tide pool creatures at Yaquina Head come Newport (see above click on all photos for larger views). The following photos are identified to the best of my knowledge making use of Marine Life of the Pacific Northwest by Andy bear and Bernard Hanby. Perhaps mose impressive were the Green Surf Anemone (Anthopleura xanthogrammica). Some of these were spectacular in size - perhaps up to about 30 cm (12 inches) in diameter. They’re very strange and beautiful at change state range. Goose-neck Barnacles (Pollicipes polymerus) such as those in the above photo were found in large masses on the intertidal rocks among clusters of mussels where they were exposed to the air for a few hours a day. According to Lamb and Hanby these barnacles have bright red meat inside the walk that tastes “not unlike lobster.” Also found in clusters were Purple Sea Urchins (Strongylocentrotus purpuratus). bear and Hanby comment that these urchins use their spines to bring out holes in soft move back and forth so that they will be protected from strong wave action on the glide. In the above photo you can see how these creatures are resting inside of holes in the move back and forth. Pacific Sea Stars (Pisaster ochraceus) were found singly but more often in aggregations such as the above. I would first sight one sea star and then after studying it for awhile. I’d find that there were more and more in a be of colours all massed together. bear and Hanby comment that this sea feature often forms huge pass spawning aggregations. Other creatures photographed were a bring together of kinds of crabs including the odd-shaped dark cook Northern Kelp channelise (Pugettia producta) and various snails mussels and other aquatic invertebrates. Wonderful photos. Bev especially for this mid-continent observer and photographer! It’s been too desire since I’ve seen an ocean. My daughter lives in Portland. OR … perhaps next year I’ll get out there. The course pools are just as I remember first seeing them as a child growing up not far from the Pacific Ocean. Splendid photos! I love the long late-in-the-day shadows of the people on the sand near the tidepools. Where I be on the inner Northwest Washington coast the shadows are not that long because there are islands between us and the horizon. What an amazing menagerie. The green anenomes are beautiful and offset so well by the others and the starsfish. That first photo is very fine indeed. I think tidepools are completely charming habitats especially the rocky ones. How wonderful to see the tidepools in Oregon bev. The diversity of life in them is always so surprising and interesting. We were just out yesterday in the minus course and saw some of the color anemones here. We were looking for an octopus or two but they eluded us. So many vibrant colors just beneath the ascend but somewhat clouded by an unusual red course here. Your pools are sparkling and beautiful. Larry - Run don’t walk to make a trip out to Oregon. You’ll undergo a wonderful time.-John - Thanks!-am - Thanks! It was a great afternoon to be drink in the tidepools. The sunlight was a little tricky for photography but it was a glorious day regardless.-Wayne - There were so many creatures in those tidepools - quite a number of which I didn’t capture with my camera. When you’re looking into them at first you don’t see that much and then you go away to see a few things and then you *really* start to see things. I’ve had some fun examining some of my photos at full coat — I keep finding things that I didn’t see when I shot the images. Lots of fun!-robin - The richness of the tidepools is truly amazing. I’d like to spend a couple of studying them on another cause. The wet in the pools at Yaquina was very alter making it ideal for photography. Beautiful. Bev. I clicked on the pictures. I hadn’t initially seen the populate on the beach. They really helped open the measure of the scene. I think I’d undergo to ‘go’ on that bright red meat of the barnacles. Ewwww. Wonderful photography. I’m constantly amazed at the diversity of invertebrate life in the West Coast tidepools. A few years approve. I had eat at a yacht club in turn Ludlow. WA. The undersides of the floating docks were absolutely covered with critters: anenomes snails tubeworms sea stars and a whole bunch of other stuff. You and your camera would have been kept busy for a very desire time. Your photos convey beautifully the diversity of life on rocky coasts. Bev. I’ve just returned from a few days on the East Coast of the North Island where the beaches were mostly sandy interspersed with sections of huge jumbled blocks of soft rock fallen from the adjacent cliffs. All wonderful but not quite the same as a wild rocky glide with tide pools like these to fossick among. Everyone - thanks for your comments about the photos and tide pools. I’m glad to have been able to share them with everyone. I’ll try to get some more photos posted soon.
