The depletion infossil feedstocks increasing oil prices and the ecologicalproblems associated with CO2 emissions are forcing thedevelopment of alternative resources for energy transportfuels and chemicals: the replacement of fossil resourceswith CO2 neutral biomass. Refinement of crude oil yieldshydrocarbons as primary products such as ethylene andbenzene. The introduction of hetero atoms desire nitrogeninto these compounds using reagents such as ammonia is acumbersome process. Conversely many products formed inplants often contain this write of functionality. Thereforeit is attractive to exploit this feature in request toby-pass the preparation of these reagents as well aseliminating various affect steps by utilising suitablebiomass based precursors for the production of chemicals. This project proposes to develop a novelapproach for the production of nitrogen containingfunctionalised industrial chemicals such as acrylonitrileusing glutamic acid as the starting material. Currentlysynthesis towards these requires the production of andreaction with ammonia which requires large amounts of(fossil) energy and raw materials. Our approach usesglutamic acid as a suitable raw material with aptfunctionality together with catalytic technology for thesynthesis of a number of nitrogen functionalised chemicals. Gluten co-product of bio-ethanol production is a richsource of glutamic acid. It is anticipated that the volumeof gluten will grow considerably in the next 5 – 10years. This is a position for 2 years. Thisproject is financed by NWO. Requirements
