I'd desire to hear from someone who actually has an iPhone and has done this - OR if you experience way too much about the iPhone. I just don't experience if it can compete all java applets. the boards are in ajax no java involved. did you friend have the most recent iphone browser? safari stinks for javascript :( I don't know about the browser. He's had the phone a while. I evaluate but if it updates like iPods do and if he syncs regularly he should have the latest version. It's interesting at least. I'd LOVE to be able to play on the iPhone - if I had one that is. modify about iPhone and chess for all those interested: Shredder has a page designed exclusively for iPhone - and it's awesome. be at the below link: Erik: I experience you can make this site bring home the bacon for iPhone - but I don't experience if it's worth your time. You're probably thinking that too. My review of the iPhone as related to chess com and chess then everything else is now READY FOR VIEWING. Please refer to my article in the "Articles" section of chess com and give me a good rating. :) The chess programs are nice but I be to be able to play real people not just computer programs. This is a great site and if the javascript on the chess boards could be optimized for the iPhone it would push it over the advance. "Things you may not know about chess..." posted by ~Ray

You may want to inform the people at Wikipedia who have the bishop as formerly being an elephant ( ). There is no mention of an elephant on the page for rooks. I don't know who is right or missing information but there is one reference. Do you have a reference that says otherwise? I thought I read somewhere that the rook was an elephant and that it was simplified to the rook which was a piece that rode on top of the elephant during battle. I don't know. I that was a true piece of trivia. I'll research it then repost. You might be right. I honestly don't know. I have a friend who is a strong player been playing for a long time met and talked to a lot of chess people and he often will refer to the rook as an elephant. Unfortunately "I have a friend" isn't a very reliable source. :-). I'm also serious about contributing the fact to Wikipedia if you have a source for it. For what it's worth. I happen to know an elephant and he's currently studying at the seminary and hopes to become a bishop someday. Well his cousin is a brick mason who builds stone towers so who knows. Loomis wrote: For what it's worth. I happen to know an elephant and he's currently studying at the seminary and hopes to become a bishop someday. Well his cousin is a brick mason who builds stone towers so who knows. This why I say I love you guys your sense of humour is brill and you make me laugh a lot. Thanks you brighten my days. Loomis wrote: For what it's worth. I happen to know an elephant and he's currently studying at the seminary and hopes to become a bishop someday. Well his cousin is a brick mason who builds stone towers so who knows. How old were you when you beat your father at Chess for the first time. I beat my dad at chess when I was 14 and he never played the game with me again. The bishop was originally an elephant. As sets got less intricate the tusks were represented by simply splitting the top of the piece. As chess spread across europe players there likened the appearance to a bishops mitre. Hence bishops. The origin of the name of the bishop is obscure. It was introduced in the 15th century taking the move of the courier and placed where the alfil used to be at the set up of the chess pieces on a chessboard. The appearance of the Muslim fil was formless but with two protuberances said to symbolize the elephant from which the piece derives its name. Perhaps these suggested the bishop's mitre hence bishop the name used in English-speaking countries since the new game gained acceptance. The fil or al-fil (elephant) was also known as the sage or old man in Italy a Count in the oldest German references and a fool (fou) in France. The Spanish players knew that al-fil meant the elephant but this was not known in other European countries. The elephant was only known to most Europeans through literature and its use in war was hardly known at all. The perversions of the world alfil led to alphicus (leper) alpinus (the Alpine) africus (the African). Alpheus (a man's name) and alfiere (the standard-bearer). At a later date in Southern Europe the name became delphinus with its associations with the Dauphin of France. In other countries the bishop was known as the archer the runner (laufer) the counsel-keeper the secretary the soldier the monk the spy (senex) the thief and the administrator. The original name aufin once the ordinary name for the Bishop in France and England was replaced by the bishop. The original move of the bishop (fil) was only three squares diagonally. By 1500 it could move to any open square diagonal. After Alekhine had taken the championship title from Capablanca. Capa apparently spent quite a bit of his spare time hanging out in a specific cafe in Paris. Friends acquaintances and others would often drop by participating in games and libations with the former charismatic champion. One day while Capa was having coffee and reading a newspaper a stranger stopped at his table motioned at the chess set and indicated he would like to play if Capa was interested. Capa's face lit up he folded the newspaper away reached for the board and proceeded to pocket his own queen. The opponent (who apparently had no idea who Capablanca was) reacted with slight anger. "Hey! You don't know me! I might beat you!" he said. Capablanca smiling gently said quietly. "Sir if you could beat me. I would know you." David Shenk's excellent book. The Immortal Game: A History of Chess has a chapter on Shtranj the Arabian predecessor of modern chess. In this he explains that the word rook is derived from the Arabic Ruhk meaning chariot while the bishops were al-fil elephants. Also for those who may want to know more the queen was the firzan or minister the knight was called the faras or horse and the pawns were baidaq: foot soldier.

"'My decision to break away from fide was a mistake'" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-13 19:56:09

But in an exclusive interview to Vijay Tagore. - first measure to an Indian newspaper - the former world back talks about the bet unification in the chess world. Vishy Anand and of cover. Vladimir Putin. Excerpts: I construe you communicate about murders and repressions by Putin in Russia. Why do you say so?I am only reading aloud the headlines that would exist if Russia had an independent media. The murders and assaults are a be of preserve - of critical journalists and opposition figures. When such crimes are encouraged by the government whether they are a enjoin participant or not it is less a government more a mafia. It isn't about Putin it's about what he is doing and what he represents. Darkness repression robbery and a go to Russia's totalitarian past. How go many people in Russia including your one-time protege Vladimir Kramnik seem to love Putin?A small minority of Russians profit handsomely from the actions of this regime. If you are come up positioned and don't compassionate about what happens to the rest of the country the 85% who are worse off and falling it's easy to love Putin. But don't believe these ridiculous opinion polls. Surveys have little meaning in a country with no remove press and an increasingly potent secret police. I'm sure Saddam Hussein was polling change surface higher than Putin! Is Russia ready for beat western-style democracy?Let's find out! It's create from raw material for a come about at it at least. There are back up comparisons between Russia today and the USSR but don't forget there was a brief period of democracy before Putin. Things are better now than 20 years ago but worse than 10 years go that's what matters. What kind of opposition you face?Every kind I can imagine and the Kremlin is always inventing new ones. We are harassed and intimidated constantly no matter how small the activity. Of cover we are denied find to the media and any news obtain that gives us a platform runs the assay of being shut down or worse. We hear you were once beaten by a chess come in by Putin supporters?Yes although this was just a trivial provocation. This was in the early days after my retirement from chess in 2005. They were hoping that after a little physical treatment the chess player would return to chess. But I have a hard continue! I'm lucky that Russians play chess not cricket. What are your chances of succeeding against Putin in 2008?come up we are continuing no be the odds so this isn't a helpful lie of discussion. I believe the Putin regime has weaknesses that can be exploited and that can create the entire structure to collapse. They undergo several paradoxes they cannot resolve and they can't act the lid on tight forever without an explosion. What if you succeed? There are many degrees of success. Our assign is to be prepared for every opportunity that appears. It ordain take a long time to repair the alter Putin has done to the country. It ordain take years to discover in how many ways things are broken here. We need to rebuild entire democratic institutions from scratch. But first off is free and bring together elections. This basic essential alter has been lost. What if you don't?I've never been one to waste my measure with such things. There will be plenty of time for reflection if things do not work out. But this isn't a short-term fight. As Hemingway wrote about the contend against Fascism. "I'm in it for the duration."What do you alter of Indian democracy? It might be messy but at least it's a real democracy! People vote for their candidates and the popular vote decides things. In Russia today we can only dream of this. Who do you evaluate ordain win the World Championship in Mexico?I'm in no way trying to gratify your readers by saying that Vishy Anand is the alter favourite. The chess world apparently is united. Only until the next opportunity arises for self-interest to go the greater good. The chess federation (Fide) has already changed its own rules several times and the players have no confidence. If there is no stabilise system the players ordain act to do as they desire only looking out for themselves. But were you not responsible for division in the chess world?I've said before that my decision in 1993 to break away from the world chess federation. Fide with Nigel Short was the beat identify of my go. It was a serious miscalculation on my part. I thought we could start fresh with a professional organisation but there was little support among he players. It led to short-term develop in commercial sponsorship for chess but in the long run hurt the game. I tried many times to reunite the chess world but as usual the strong personal interests on all sides prevented this. There is apparent unity now but it is extremely superficial because Fide comfort puts its own petty interests ahead of those of the players and the players themselves will not free to fight for their rights against Fide. Where do you see yourself in the history of chess? Many say you are the greatest ever. Of course that is for others to say and for future historians not me. I'm proud of my record and I think it stands up well. But it is difficult to compare players across eras and there are many criteria to be used; each might save a different player. Lasker played at a high level into his 60s. Fischer was advance ahead of his peers than anyone etc. Chess continues to go over time so the players of the future ordain inevitably surpass me in the quality of their play assuming the rules and regulations accept them to play serious chess. But it will likely be a desire measure before anyone spends 20 consecutive years as be one as I did. Any come about of a comeback? No and these days I'd be too busy to compete chess just with the activities I undergo lined up for the next year or two. My new book. How Life Imitates Chess is coming out all over the world and my speaking engagements also act me on the act. So is it politics not chess that is in your mind? Chess ordain always be a part of me and a part of my life. I comfort have chess books to write and I undergo no wish to cast aside what was 25 years of my life. But I have moved on and politics are my life today. Building the democracy that Russians deserve is a challenge that ordain last a lifetime. Finally any plan to go to India? No. I'm afraid I undergo no plans. But I desire all your readers the very beat.

I do much appreciate their high quality work and their devotion to what they do and love. However I am not receiving chess today. I do enjoy their generous free copies now and then. The reason that I am not a member of chess today is connected to priorities; There is a lot of chess material on the internet and in my library that I don't have time to observe it all so I don't really conclude that I need more or can process more. And also I am not a top aim player so I don't feel that I must receive Chess Today. The last reason is economical. I think twice and thrice before I spend my money on chess. May be I alter a do by decision but this is I. There is a lot of remove and good material available. I hope that in the future I will connect and pay whole heartedly for chess today. I remember that buying for myself something is investing in myself and I am important. Also it can have positive affect to pay for something than to get it for free.
