A few months ago. I received a surprising and moving e-mail from Lt. Col. Darrel Vandeveld a military lawyer who has been prosecuting detainees at Guantánamo for over a year. He had he said. "grave misgivings" about what was happening at Guantánamo the trials and U. S policy. What advice did I have to offer? I dashed off a reply to this effect: "Quit."
He did just that as reported on page one of last Sunday's Los Angeles Times.

Over on our Metro Columnists' blog. Steve Blow notes that a local "organic gardening" expert has decided he knows enough about medicine to advise people not to get a flu shot. Steve posts a link to Howard Garrett's screed
to the AMA's scientific evaluation of flu shots sigh. (I've posted a comment to it if you're interested.)
it's natural yes? The Angel of Death mushroom poison ivy and an earthquake are all totally natural. "Organic," even. And not particularly good for one's health. Me. I got my flu shot.

"We are judged not by our military conquests not by our accumulation of wealth not by our scientific achievements; we are judged by how we treat the least the powerless the helpless amongst us and I and millions of others can't imagine anyone more powerless more helpless and truly the least amongst us than the unborn child being carried in his/her mother's womb. Can you?"
"Most of our current economic problems can be traced to an excess of greed and fear. A few powerful people manipulated the system and were able to grasp great amounts of wealth without concern for the consequences. And certainly the Prosperity Gospel preached in Christian evangelical circles has contributed."
Joseph Martino the Catholic bishop of Scranton. Pa. showed up unannounced at a church forum on the presidential election and let everyone know in no uncertain terms that his word on abortion is the final word.
Martino is a hardliner on how Catholics should regard pro-choice candidates. He had earlier to his diocese saying abortion is
issue by which Catholics must judge candidates. (He went further than the bishops of Dallas and Fort Worth did in their on the subject. Martino wrote that "public officials who are Catholic and who persist in public support for abortion and other intrinsic evils should not partake in or be admitted to the sacrament of Holy Communion. As I have said before. I will be vigilant on this subject.")
"If our senses conveyed the whole truth to us we would see the Earth as rivers and glaciers of electrons each speck of dust as a rolling mass of light." -- Paramahansa Yogananda (1893-1952) best known in the West for his book. Autobiography of a Yogi.

Over on Beliefnet. Steven Waldman has transcribed parts of an interview Sarah Palin did with James Dobson of Focus on the Family. The interview reveals if that's the right word that she is a devout Christian of specific and particular beliefs. Unlike some political candidates who profess faith but fail to connect it with public policy. Palin is pretty direct about that. Among the more poignant passages is her explanation for how she discerns God's will in her youngest child perhaps the most famous Down syndrome child in the world:
"I've always had near and dear to my heart the mission of protecting the sanctity of life and being pro-life a hardcore pro-lifer but I think this opportunity for me to really be walking the walk and not just talking the talk. There's purpose in this also for a greater good to be met. I feel so privileged and blessed to have been. I guess chosen to have Trig enter our lives because I do want it to help us in our cause here in allowing America to be a more welcoming nation for all of our children."
with other transcript excerpts. And of Palin's nearly half-hour conversation with Dobson.
Turns out their opponents the Philadelphia Phillies also have a bit of faith-tinted history in their nickname.
The Phillies are one of the oldest franchises in baseball. They were -- as the Philadelphia Quakers.
Eighty-four percent of white Americans said they'd be willing to vote for a minority candidate for president according to a study by Baylor University's Institute for Studies of Religion.
The percentage who would support a minority candidate is smaller -- but still large -- among those who say the Bible should be taken literally (75 percent) and those who attend an all-white congregation (69 percent).
of the findings from Baylor. It includes a link to download tables that break the numbers down further.
I haven't read the findings closely but I wonder if there isn't an implied causality here that doesn't really exist.
