I was recently contacted by a traditional publisher: Revivalnation com. The president of that publishing company saw my books at lulu com and asked me to submit my book(s) to his company. I must admit that I don't know anything about this company but I am hopeful that it is ligit. Do any of you know anything about this publishing company? If you do please let me know. I am very hopeful that I have finally found a true traditional publishing company that is really interested in my book(s). God bless,Debtfree

"Traditional Publisher">.<Will everyone please put a moratorium on this term... You should say "commercial publisher". Anyway... Good way to make sure you're not getting roped into anything would be to check out and for their guidelines and "Thumbs Down" lists. If anything comes off as a red flag to me it's that it seems strange how they're pushing their publishing wing so much. Generally a legitimate commercial publisher will put forth their services through such means as market guides and what-not and they'll have a very concise professional page regarding submissions guidelines and other matters of that sort like what you might find at (look near bottom of page) or at. This line in particular seems troublesome to me:
This is usually a classic schemer's technique: making you buy all of the books from the first run is just as good as having you pay for the printing of the books and everything else. I dunno. I'd say proceed with caution. Usually even legitimate small presses are inundated with more than enough queries manuscripts and proposals so that they don't need to fish for other submissions. Take that for what it's worth. I know if I were looking for a commercial publisher that I know would give the attention to my manuscript that it desires. I'd probably be looking elsewhere.

Ransom. I looked at the revivalnation com site and it said this is a new publishing company started by Greg Holmes. That name rang a bell -- I thought I remembered a CW member of that name so I did a search. I found threads where he'd posted although apparently he is no longer a member:Do you remember him?

No. I don't remember him! But that is fascinating. I think I've heard the name from other places. Fascinating info. Tommie. My cautions sadly must still remain. Hopefully they'll turn out to be for nothing in the end but if there's one thing I've learned in my years as a believer just because it's run by "Christians" doesn't mean I can trust it.

That reminds me of a situation from the movie. "The Education of Little Tree," where Little Tree was swindled by a man claiming to be a Christian. His grandparents asked him what he'd learned and he said he'd learned not to trust Christians. I don't remember if that was in the book...

Rule of thumb for "commercial publishing" as Ransom said:Money flows to the author not away. Always. Though I'm sure a lot of commercially published authors will agree that the money flows so slowly it seems to be flowing away from the author at times the bottom line is your publisher won't ask for a dime. Not one penny. They will likely ask for your time and promotion efforts but they won't require you to pay them for the privilege of being published. Although more important than the flow of cash to me is the distribution channel. After all even if the publisher cuts you a check what good does it do if they can't get the books into stores? You can get your book on Amazon yourself using Lulu why sign with somebody else if that's all they're going to do?There's a lot to think about when deciding whether or not to sign a publishing contract.
